Personal Background:

Hello my name is Giday Ahmad and I was born and raised in Afghanistan. I came to Canada at the age of 8 years young, I first landed in Toronto and was living in the Jane and Eglinton area in the west end of the city. I was new to everything, the language, the culture, the people, the manner, and perspectives of people all around me. At first I did not like this country, then after years of trying to understand the culture of this land I learned to hate it. As i started growing up and survived my teenage years I learned to develop and meet new people from different walks of life. I learned to understand this country, I slowly started to adapt, but not fully. I learned that the culture here is so great that I could not blame my view of this nation on a handful of individuals I had interactions with as a child. I missed my homeland, I yearned for it almost every night when I was a child and would beg my mom to take me back, but after years and years of learning to adjust. I took full advantage of this country great opportunity and potential for growth. It was a big step for me to start university it took a lot of hard work, but I am so glad to be here and want to make use of every opportunity I get here. I hope to go back one day to Afghanistan and bring about life back to my motherland. This is the main reason why I am taking International Development Studies as my major along with City Studies. My personal interest are simply that, that I hope to make a difference in people’s lives, mainly people who have little to no opportunity in life.

Interest in the course:

I took this course because I know absolutely nothing about technology, although I feel that I should learn about the at least the basics of technology. Not only does this course give me a brief insight to how technology work, mainly open source software such as Wikipedia works, it gives me brief insight on the media how ICT is related to this part the media. I am excited to learn how I may be able to contribute to the communication streams and how the impact on my life will be. I am scared that I may not be able to keep up with this course because the material is extremely new to me and I was not aware this would be a topic of study at the university, so it might be a little overwhelming for me.

Vision or Aspiration as an Active Learner:

I feel that having weekly activities will encourage me to not procrastinate and actually do the readings well before class. I tend to fall behind and manage to work something out in the last minute before but I learned a very valuable lesson in my first semester in the past at university, I am certain to not make such a mistake like that again, having these weekly activities is only a added bonus where I am almost forced to complete my readings in time, this will not only help me do well in the course but more so understand the material and be able to listen attentively in class and actively participate. I also feel that having a smaller class is a great idea and I will have my voice and views heard where in other classes that is simply not possible with 300 in one class. I hope to understand the media more in depth, in relation to technology and in relation to other means of communications. It is my focus to learn of the various techniques such as open source, citizen participation, community formation, and copyright laws in terms of communication. I feel understanding why people don’t trust Wikipedia and to understand why people are slowly adapting to the fact of using the online encyclopaedia as a reliable source in this generation. The strengths that I feel I posses is my relation to worldwide news, I can sometimes directly relate to some of the news that involves the Middle East, mainly Afghanistan. I have been impacted by means of my family being involved with issues that are news worthy and I was able to figure out the communication methods used by various media outlets in response to the news; they chose a more negative approach to portraying the matter. The news appeared to be in a different light when I went online, this caused confusion and led me to contact my family to find the facts. I feel this course will strengthen my knowledge of ICT but also allow me to share my views and experiences with the media and Afghanistan.
