i. Personal Background

My name is Daniela Spagnuolo and I am a second year International Development Studies Co-op Specialist student from Toronto. I'm really interested in Political Science and hope to somehow work on issues of food security from a political perspective after graduation.

ii. Interest in the Course

I chose to take IDSB10 this year to get a better understanding about how media, specifically ICT, is being used in the Global South to solve development issues. I am excited to learn more about the potential for ICT as a tool for development, however I am also worried that my lack of technological knowledge will make the course challenging. Either way, I am excited to expand my knowledge on an aspect of development that is not always covered in depth in other classes and to learn about practical applications of technology in development around the world.

iii. Vision or Aspiration as an Active Learner

I hope that IDSB10 will allow me to gain more collaborative skills as an active learner. I am hoping that by working closely with other members of the class I will be able to learn more about information communication technology in an accessible way by having a chance to interact with others and share knowledge of our various experiences with the topic. As someone who was only really exposed to this style of learning in IDSA02 last year, this class provides me with the opportunity to expand on the skills I learned through that experience, including the importance of being self-motivated to keep up in the class and at the same time collaborative in order to maximize the success of projects. I think that this class will be a great chance to experience interactive learning by drawing on each contributor in the class's unique interests, knowledge, and strengths.

I am hoping to really learn more about how ICT can be used in both development projects, as well as how it is already being used in the field and the ways its use can be maximized for the most effective development impacts. Although I don't know much about the technological aspects of development, I'm really interested in learning about the social and political implications and advantages about using ICT for development purposes over the course of the semester.

Although my technological experience is fairly limited, I am an active social media user with experience using Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Wordpress, Blogspot and Google+ for both personal and promotional purposes and I feel as though this class will help me to also examine the potential for using social networking for development purposes. Seeing how social media has already had a significant and growing role in shaping social movements and has the potential to spread relevant information around the world in a quick, accessible way, I believe this technology could be very useful for development. I'm hoping to learn more about the potential of social media in development in addition to other types of media and technology which I am less familiar with.
