Second Survey Draft

Page history last edited by Leslie Chan 11 years, 5 months ago

Nov. 3

Here is how the grade for the second survey/quiz is calculated:

The first 10 questions total 20 marks. If you complete all the questions, you will get the full 20 automatically.

The last question regarding Benkler's statement is worth 10 marks and this is the only question being "graded". So if you receive an 8 for this question and you completed the other 10 questions, your total will be 28/30. As the exercise is worth 10%, your mark on Blackboard will be 9.3.

Note, however, that only those who sent me the Benkler's answer by email will receive a final grade for this, as I sent out a couple of notices earlier indicating that I cannot retrieve your answer from the survey results, as it is anonymous. If you did not save your answer offline, you can go back into your BB account and retrieve the answer and sent it to me.

Below is the draft of the second survey/quiz of the course. This exercise is designed as a mid-term course evaluation and the intend is to solicit feedback from students regarding the progress of the course thus far, and to invite suggestions on how best to improve the learning experience for the remainder of the course. It also provides an opportunity for you to reflect on some of the issues discussed in the course so far.

This draft is intended as a preview and comments are welcome. But comments will be closed on Monday Oct. 22 at 9 pm, and you will be able to complete the exercise on Blackboard. You will receive an email with the link for the survey as well. The survey/quiz will close on Friday Oct. 26th at 9 pm. If you miss this closing time, you will not be able to re-do the survey. If for some reasons you are not able to part-take in the exercise over the week, please contact me in advance.

The survey/quiz is worth of total of 10% of the course. This is in accordance with the evaluation scheme, but the date and format is slightly altered. Question 1-5 is worth 1 mark each, and question 6-10 is worth 3 each, while question 11 is worth 10 marks, for a total of 30 marks. There is no right or wrong answer for 1-10. You will get the marks just for answering 1-5. 6-10 requires a bit of effort, and only question 11 requires preparation and deeper reflection.  Please feel free to comment on question 7-10 as honestly as possible. Don't feel that you need to hold back any negative comments, though constructive criticism would obviously be welcomed and encouraged.

We look forward to reading your responses.

Leslie and Becky

But receiving notices and participating are very different processes. Don't you think?

Is it still an hour time frame to complete the exercise?

Leslie Chan said

at 4:17 pm on Oct 22, 2012

No, there is no time frame other than the closing time, which is now Sat. Oct. 27 at 9 pm.

I agree it is participation but I would prefer to call it "passive participation" instead of active engagement.

Hi Prof Chan and Becky,

Even though I have not completed all the survey answers, when I click 'Save All Answers', can I resume the survey afterwards and does this save the answers I have completed so far? When I clicked 'Save All Answers', a notification came up saying 'Question is Unanswered'. Does this mean I have to complete all my answers even though I want to resume taking the questions later?

what's the marking criteria for the final question?

Leslie Chan said

at 10:08 pm on Oct 25, 2012

Very simple really. We are looking for a clear understanding of the statement from Benkler's vantage point, and connecting ideas or issues discussed in the course (and you could pick any issue) with how you interpret his statement.

Saman Goudarzi said

Thank you for extending the time to October 27 at 9 PM, I think since a lot of us are trying to meet the Stage 2 Group Assignment Deadline for Friday, Oct 26th, that was really helpful!

Professor Chan,
The Survey Link is no longer appearing on blackboard under course materials. Would you be able to replace the link so we could finish the survey by tonight? Thanks

Raissa Chua said

at 10:12 am on Oct 27, 2012

Professor, I can't find the survey. It's not on blackboard anymore. Could you please post it soon so I can finish it by tonight?

Katie Ahern said

at 10:43 am on Oct 27, 2012

Raissa, the questions that are on the survey on blackboard are the same ones as posted above. You can do what I am, and just compose your answers in a word doc, and when the survey becomes available again, copy and paste them in. At least you will be able to have your work done, for when the survey comes back online. Hope this helps!

Jenna Davis said

Great idea, Katie! I can't find it either so I'm going to do that. And in the event that it never comes up, I guess we can just e-mail our answers (in the word doc) to the professor before 9pm.

Katie Ahern said

at 3:05 pm on Oct 27, 2012

We could also each create a wiki page with our answers (copy and past the format above) that way leslie will have them on the wiki

Another Blackboard glitch, I am afraid!

I've reset the system and it should be there now. I also extended the due date to Monday 5 pm. You should have received a notice from BB as well. Let me know if you are still unable to see the quiz.

Leslie Chan said

at 7:58 pm on Oct 29, 2012

I am able to download the results now, but the file is a jumbled mess. I am still trying to sort this out. Worst come to worst, I may have to come to you guys for the answer to the last question.

rabia said

Okay I'm freaking out because my grade on the second survey says 0.00/10! WHY! if its not graded yet, it should show a hyphen '-' instead of 0! I posted it like 15-20 mins before the time. PLEASE does anyone else see the same thing?

Leslie Chan said

at 7:56 pm on Oct 29, 2012

Don't panic! We haven't graded the survey yet, as the results are not machine readable. Becky and I will have to go through them manually, and we will try to get through them as soon as possible.

rabia said

Aftab Arif said

Professor Chan,
I have viewed the marks on Blackboard, but does the mark include the Benkler question or is the survey on its own, since there is a section for the quiz itself. As well, for the survey wouldn't all answers count for full marks, since it is based on each individual's work ethics and opinions?

Leslie Chan said

at 3:59 pm on Nov 3, 2012

Mary, yes, anyone who completed the survey will get the full 20 out of 30 marks. Please see my further explanation on the top of the page.

I will be responding to the various thoughtful feedback from the class separately. Again, the responses were completely anonymous, so it turned out as some students requested.
