Quiz

About the first quiz:

According to our agreed grading scheme, the first quiz (worth 10%)  is scheduled for the week of Oct. 1. Here are the key parameters:

1.Timing

The quiz will be released on Blackboard (BB) on Thursday Oct. 4 at 9 am, and it will close on Oct. 5 at 9 am.  You are given one hour within the 24 hour window to complete the quiz. In other words, you can start the quiz anytime between 9 am on Thursday to 9 am on Friday. However, once you initiated the quiz on BB, the timer will start and the quiz will close after 60 minutes. So it is important that you find yourself an uninterrupted hour with good internet connection for the period. Use a land-line if you are not sure of the wi-fi you are connected to. If your connection is interrupted during the quiz, you will not be able to complete the process as I don't have control over the setup on BB.

If you do not have reliable access to the internet at home, please use one of the many workstations in the library or in the computing centre.  Do check in advance to ensure reliable access.

If you have a legitimate reason for not being able to take the quiz during this period, please let me know IN ADVANCE.

2. Set up

The quiz will be administered on Blackboard, much like the first survey most of you had completed in the first week. It is extremely important that you be able to access BB on the specified time. For those who missed the survey and who signed into the course late, please ensure that you can access the course via the Portal/Blackboard site. Please contact me if you can see the course on the portal <http://portal.utoronto.ca>.

3. Format

The quiz will consist of 25 questions. Most will be Multiple choices, a few will be either/or (true/false) and a few will be matching type questions (e.g. matching a concept with a statement). A couple of sample MC questions are appended below.

4. Content coverage

The quiz will cover materials from the first three weeks of class. Questions will be drawn from all the online resources (readings, videos, lecture cast) referred to in the weekly pages. So be sure to review all the materials prior to the quiz.

5. Academic integrity

While this course encourages collaboration, the quizzes are designed as checkpoints to ensure that students are advancing through the course materials.  As such, each student is expected to write the quiz by him or herself. If you started the quiz before your friend(s) in the class, please resist the temptation of passing along the questions.  This is an honour system, so please treat it with honour and honesty.

Sample Questions

Fritz Machlup was among the early scholars to discuss the relationship between:

a)      Knowledge and cultural preservation

b)      Information quality and economic returns

c)       Infrastructure and industrial development

d)      Knowledge production and economic growth

What BEST characterizes the shift from information to network society:

a)      A shift away from collaborative production and towards top-down strategies

b)      A shift away from the use of non-renewable towards renewable resources

c)       A shift away from the production of tangible towards non-tangible resources

d)      A shift way from collective social structures towards more individualist ones

Hi Prof. Chan,

I am apprehensive about the quiz . First, I thought we could get 2 hours time to complete the quiz. Second, If I could recall from the first week of live session, aren't the quiz supposed to be on two week's readings immediately before the quiz week?

Lastly, I would appreciate if you could reconsider extending the 24 hour window to 36 hours.

Sincerely
Kethees

The quiz will actually take 30 minutes to complete so one hour is already more than sufficient.

Each quiz is focused primarily on the materials not tested before. The first week only have a couple of very light readings.

Why 36 hours???? I am bending over backward to be flexible, so don't be unreasonable.

PLEASE PLEASE don't make such a fuzz about the quiz. It really takes all the fun out of learning. I put the quiz in to enhance the course, not to give students a hard time. So PLEASE relax!!!!

Hi all,

As a previous student of this course, I just wanted to share a couple of things about the quiz. Firstly, one hour is definitely MORE than enough time, so don't panic about that. Secondly, the questions are designed in such a way that you cannot easily "google" specific information. That being said, you will want to concentrate on understanding key concepts, and their relationships to one another. Thirdly, the quizzes are a great incentive for all students to really get on top of their readings and course work. It ensures everyone is on the same page, in terms of course discussions and participation - so try to think of it as a positive thing! Obviously studying can be a pain, but this type of quiz really isn't much different than many of the other courses you are likely taking...

Thanks for the reassuring words. So are we only tested on the texts and videos that are assigned as " required"?

I requested 36 hours window, because I have a lecture from 9-11 am, tutorial from 12-2pm, and another lecture from 3-5pm for Thursday. As for friday, I have a tutorial from 11-12. I feel like I am not getting an adequate time gap to review and refresh my memory immediately before taking the quiz.

Thanks again for the reconsiderration.

This looks good to me but i would like to know would the questions be more subjective or objective in their approach?

Just a quick question: is the quiz on the required readings, lectures etc or also on the additional readings? Thanks

The two additional readings for Week three are for information only. They are not included in the upcoming quiz. They provide helpful background for those who wish to go deeper into the topic of knowledge as a form of public good. I will be returning to this topic in greater details later.

Dear Professor Chan,

This is Ming Hui Yuan taking IDSB10 course. I would like to apologize for closing the website by accident while doing the quiz one on my computer. After that, I logged in and tried several times to do the quiz again, but it says that the test has been submitted. Therefore, please allow me to do the test again, or inform me what I should do.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Ming Hui Yuan
